General approach to structural categorization

Perovskites - Overview Structural Criteria Chemical Criteria Homepage

This part has been adapted from the review "Hierarchies of perovskite-like crystals" by K. S. Aleksandrow and V. V. Beznosikov in Physics of the Solid State 39, 695-715 (1997).

A major classification approach by the authors is made by "opening" windows in which they show the relation of a certain (window-) title structure to the perovskite structure and then build more detailed relations between different sub-entries.

1 ‚ Perovskites
2 ‚ Cation-deficient structures
3 ‚ Anion-deficient structures
4 ‚ Polytypes AmBnX3m
5 ‚ Layered structures
6 ‚ Ruddlesden-Popper-phases
7 ‚ Aurivillius phases
8 ‚ Other Homological Series

Links to the main entries are listed on the left side.

Variants of the Perovskite structure and the related structure types are classified by microscopic effects and phenomena such as

  • structural distorsion, e.g.
    • the Jahn-Teller-effect
    • rotational distorsion

  • ordering effects, e.g.
    • magnetic ordering
    • atom ordering
    • vacancy ordering

  • possible solid solutions
