Fourth Annual VTX Crystallography Workshop
July 10 -July 12, 2006
The Crystallography Laboratory held its fourth annual summer workshop in crystallography for undergraduates this summer. Participants were given an introduction to crystallography theory, taught how to collect data from their own crystals on the laboratory's diffractometers, and how to determine the structures from their data. Without previous crystallographic experience many students finished with refined crystal structures ready for publication!
The workshop is supported by the division of Chemistry at NSF through its REU program (grant CHE-427351) and by the sponsorship of Oxford Diffraction.
The workshop is open to undergraduate science majors and faculty from Universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and other regional Universities, and to students enrolled in the REU program of the Chemistry department at Virginia Tech. Light lunches are provided for all participants, and dinner and local accommodation will be covered for registrants traveling long distances (2 people/room, $10 dinner allowance).
Requirements & Registration
No previous experience of crystallography is required. The course is intended for undergraduate science majors and their faculty at universities in Virginia and the region. If you wish to register, contact Dr. Carla Slebodnick as soon as possible. Spaces are limited! Please provide the names of all the people you are registering and specify whether or not you will require lodging for them.
Course Schedule for 2006 (2007 will be similar)
Day 1: Start 8:30am
Course Overview. Crystallography Lab Tour. Software Installation. Lecture on Crystallography Basics (Braggs law, Structure Factors, Phase Problem). Mount a crystal and begin an overnight data collection.
Hands-on Crystal Screening. Demonstrate data reduction, structure solution, structure refinement, and preparing results for publication (CIF files). Begin data collections on samples.
Lecture on Crystallographic Symmetry (What is a space group?). Perform data reduction, structure solution, and structure refinement on student data sets. Collect data on remaining samples.
Day 4: Optional
Continue with more difficult datasets.
