Personal info for rmm

This person is currently certified at Apprentice level.

Name: Ramon Mall

Notes: Why is it that PS printers still cost so much more ? It's about time someone made one of them US$ 100 black boxes with (flash upgradable) Ghostscript to make all them HP, Epson, Lexmark inkjets and lasers look and behave like Postscript printers. Unfortunately this wont be feasible because, once done, the manufacturers would finally adapt their PS "option" to a more earthly and reasonable level.

Sorry guys. A weird mixture of ignorance and not knowing that Advogato diary system made me click things and somehow I made myself something I'm not. Happily enough "ghostgum" helped me out and put me back into a more adequate incarnation form (of apprentice). Thanks !

Concerning "gsfontmap":
The good ghosts (haha, love that :-) behind GS and GSView invited me to, once having reached maturity, have gsfontmap somehow included in or linked to GS. An excellent idea because such all those who could possibly use / need gsfontmap have a bright chance to find it / fall over it.
During gsfontmaps adolescence I will use this diary to keep you informed and to take your ideas / requests. Please, feel invited to let me know what you think / need / want !

-> Raph
You want us to tell more about why we are here ? Well, where would/should we put that info ?
--------------------------------
Yuck !
If I get that right, I have to hand-edit any additional fonts in Fontmap.GS ?! No way. I'm too stupid and too ignorant (well, any way in DTP/font/... related things) to take that pain. And some Googleing indicated that there are many others with similar problems.
But then, I once read a poem about Buddha sitting on a tree in someones garden and sometimes he would dance ... Well, this Buddha said that being constructive was a major ingredient of the Zen of happiness ... So, I basically had no choice other than somehow turning this problem into something constructive like a solution.
So I wrote
gsfontmap
which "scans" a given font directory and creates/outputs the necessary lines for Fontmap.GS. Like so:
prompt$ gsfontmap.py /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/*.pfa \
> /usr/local/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib/Fontmap.GS
Done. Found / Processed 21 fonts
prompt$
(Works with *.afm, *pfa, *.pfb).
Anyone interested ? If so, let me (rmm AT cynexus.net) know where to put / publish it.

YUCK (2)!

Upgraded Slackware to 8.1 coming with GS 6.53. Installed HPijs (or whatever. I mean that thingy that HP Officejets need in order to behave like printers). Installed PDQ, a very nice (how you call that ? Printer software ?).
Didn't move a millimeter
Put some logging code into GS ijs source and recompiled GS. Yeah, probably there is a "debug" switch like "Z". Now what do I want to see ? Pixelmap details ? interpreter Stack ?
Come on !
I just wanna see what moves. Kind of. Found out that fonts weren't found. Plus other problem stuff. Whatever.
Know, what I finally did ? Wrote a lousy shell script. Very low-level. very primitive and rude.
Worked like a charm !
THAT's why Linux isn't going to be standard anytime soon on corporate desktops.
Would you like to trace your IP packets in order to find out how to send email ?
Well, salesmen, secretaries and managers don't like to get involved with the innards of GS or lprng ...
