I now have a Samsung ML-4600 laser printer. It's cheap, and it does PCL 5 and PCL 6 so it's not a problem to use it with both Gimp-Print and gs. Well, almost...If I use PCL 6 with GhostScript, it seems (and it's confirmed from looking into gs) that gs rasterizes the full image, then sends it to the printer - it's looooong over the USB cable, and furthermore the half-tone are worse than those produced by the PCL 5 interpreter inside the printer.
If I print PCL 5 or 6 @600dpi from gs, everything is fine. If I print PCL 5 @600dpi from Gimp-Print, the printer goes out of RAM (it only has 4 Mb RAM). Ok, I could just add more RAM, but... I think I should try to fix that in software when I have time.
I managed to get hold of PCL 5 documentation, so I may after all fix this myself.
