Introduction

Platon is a Shelx Compatible structure Viewing and Analysis toolkit software package by Ton Spek that has a wide variety of functionality;, structure drawing, checking, validation, etc. On the UNIX version, this includes the System S system for structure solution and refinement that wraps around a variety of software including, Shelxs, Crunch, Dirdif, Sir and Shelxl. Information is given below on installing System S with the previously mentioned solution and refinement programs.

Some functions available in Platon are totally brilliant and should be considered mandatory for both single crystal and powder diffraction based crystallographers. These include ADDSYM to find missing symmetry. And for organic/organometallic structures, the ability to generate at the click of a button, a CSD (Cambridge Structure Database) QUEST query to check for already published and related structures.

If you are a Windows user but wish to gain free access to the UNIX System S (that is a part of Platon) there are pages on the CCP14 site on how to setup a PC to dual boot Windows or Redhat Linux. and PC to dual boot Windows or FreeBSD UNIX.. These UNIX based Operating Systems are freely downloadable off the internet. For Redhat Linux and FreeBSD, all you need are the two boot floppies for a network/internet based install.

(Please note that screen dumps in the following pages have been taken and reduced in very low resolution 640x480 pixel mode for web based screen dumps. The higher the screen resolution, the clearer and nicer the Platon menus and graphics will look.)
