Why use Apache

Free software and seems to be the best all-round webserver around.

Where to get Apache

As of 21st March 2004, the latest version of Apache 2.0.x was 2.0.49. Update to this to fix various security issues on the CCP14 Linux server.

Compiling and Installing Apache on Linux

  • To extract the install file, grab the latest tar.gz file from the Apache website and type gzip -d < httpd-2.0.49.tar.gz | tar xvof -

  • Go into the httpd-2.0.49/source subdirectory and then do (enabling mod_speling, mod magic and mod_rewrite) - do ./configure --help if you have problems with things to enable:
    • ./configure --enable-mime-magic --enable-speling --enable-rewrite
    • make
    • Then as root: make install (this installs into /usr/local/apache2)
    • done!

  • To have Apache start on bootup, put the following in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:
    • #Start Apache 2 webserver

echo "Starting apache webserver - startup in /etc/rc.d/rc.local"

      /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start

  • Now for the more tricky part of configuration.

Configuring Apache

To be more fully described.

Hack away and test until happy.

/usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/> for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/foo.log".
#
# Change log - got to get in the habit. - Lachlan.
# 27th April 1999 - Lachlan - add Edipus.dl.ac.uk to the config.
# 11th May 1999 - Lachlan - do redirect in www.ccp14 for new Shape Software Site Mirror
# 12th May 1999 - Lachlan - do /gifs as an alias for DPLOT mirror
# put icons directory of the default of /usr/local/apache/icons
# 19th May 1999 - put redirect for Crys program in www.ccp14
# create iucr-cpd virtual server
# create megido (free Pascal compiler virtual server)
# put redirects for sv1.ccp14 to take into account update ftp mirror config.
# 24th May 1999 - Make changes that will allow a gif counter to be installed
# - Instead of making changes to permissions - put GIF Counter in /cgi-bin/util/
# so that traps for script kiddies checking for /cgi-bin/Count will still not work
# and mirroring stuff won't be affected so much. May change this as this could be
# a way to make some of the mirrored pages behave more civilized if they have pointer to a GIF Counter
# 24th May 1999 - Recompile and install Apache (using cc) to include following modules so the GIF Counter will work
# There is a way around this with the GIF counter by having the counter not run in script mode -
# but strict mode is good to have for the Counter
# AddModule modules/standard/mod_log_agent.o
# AddModule modules/standard/mod_log_referer.o
# 24th May 1999 - Not working, take above modules out of config and recompile and install Apache (using cc)
# - This may mean it is the log file format that has to be changed? Will check with the Counter Mailing list
# 27th May 1999 - Optimise some redirects for the webstats.ccp14.ac.uk page so they don't bad-link.
# 30th May 1999 - Change the config file ready for end of month to have referrer in the log so the GIF Counter can run
# securely.
# 1st June 1999 - SGI Server crashed on the evening of the 31st May but new logging format did not seem to work.(?)
# - Restrict access to dl.ac.uk and ccp14.ac.uk domains for coffeeclub.dl.ac.uk
# - Hold it - may have sorted out the referrer log stuff - have to put this if log files are
# specified in each virtual domain
# - Oh well - shouldn't being doing this life (1:14am in morning) but have sorted this referrer stuff out
# I think. Problem may be I am using a TransferLog directive in many of the virtual servers and this
# might be a throwback to when 1.2.6 was running(?). Will check this out and fix this up.
# Go for combined log to get the inforomation for the gif counter to run securely.
# 1st June 1999 - Yes Replace TransferLog with CustomLog. But now the nameserver does not seem to be up 1:38am
# so cannot check this out properly <grrr>
# now reconfigure the GIF counter that it runs in secure mode. (there was a reason for all this bother)
# - Add rule to fix up GSAS redirection broken on one of the page pointers.
# Existing GSAS redirect rules may not be robust if Bob adds a directory starting with a capital letter.
# Fix this up antoher time.
# 9th June 1999 - add sbtcoffee.dl.ac.uk and fellwalking.dl.ac.uk Permissions for fellwalking are the world.
# 30th June 1999 - add FilesMatch command that Denies access to any . files that may have got onto the webarea
# Mainly through mirroring which downloads as a . file and as they have not been renamed, and
# are most likely corrupted. refer: http://www.pyr8.com/tutorials/exploits/cobalt.html
# 1st June - extra security options for doobry, iucr and security for the IUCr Glasgow CD-ROM
# 5th June - stuffing around to get things happy for IUCr Glasgow CD-ROM

# 17th August - add restricted sites iucrteaching.ccp14.ac.uk iucrcomputing.ccp14.ac.uk
# 20th August - Set MaxClients to 70 due to some strangeness that resulted in not-enough
# swap space problems on the 15th - possibly getting hit by someone wierd. Each httpd
# deamon seems to be now be taking up ~1.6Meg so 70 should be safe.
# 21st August - upgrade to Apache 1.3.9
# 1st September - set redirets for Sebastien, use the Listen Option to do this which overrides the port option
# 3rd September - after Webserver got busy last night - set upper limit of servers to MaxClients 150 as this
# should be OK for standard stuff. Then again, looking at the logs - this was again doing a bit hit on the
# Cygwin stuff which could overload the 128 Meg RAM - so put this to 80 for now and see what happens.
# 9th September - set redirets for Brian Toby site to new address /bt1 to /pub/cryst
# 17th September set redirets for Brian Toby web area http://www.ccp14.ac.uk/ccp/web-mirrors/briantoby/~toby/
# to http://www.ccp14.ac.uk/ccp/web-mirrors/briantoby/programs/crystallography
# 19th September - set redirects for updated reactos site now on its own virtual domain.
# 20th September - set redirects for updated gnu ftp site gnuftp.ccp14.ac.uk
# 24th September - getting proftpd ftp server going - change default directories for Redhat and Debian so it
# gets the FTP install distribution set
# Add *.sgml as a MIME type for the upcoming FreeBDS website. Wrong - sgml is already in there?
# 25th September - forget about FreeBSD web and have the webarea pointing to the FreeBSD distribution area
# 3rd October 1999 - Do redirect for broken part of http://www.gnu.org mirro manual area

# and modify/delete old redirects (doobry was working as the 8.3 CD webgrab area for IUCr Glasgow 1999
# 6th October 1999 - put heaps of short cut aliases to make demos/browsing easier for myself to get to
# places on the webpage in one go with minimum typing. This should not affect anything else.
# 14th October 1999 - Do a redirect to make WinGX gallery.html happy. Broken link somewhere.
# 15th October 1999 - Do a redirect for moved Mumit Khan FTP Site
# 24th October 1999 - Some local fast access redirects and enlarge number of simultaenous
# access to 210 for possible greater use of the server.
# 26th October - lower limit on simultaenous access to 70 to get around possible hack attack/probe
# from China? logs in ~lzc/temp/
# 26th October - do redirects for doobry.ccp14.ac.uk for bca stats that clicks on page
# stats go to the BCA site.

# iucr page can be vetted - and IUCr teqaching in the future.
# 30th Nov 1999 - Try out some of the following and see how it goes.
# Just read up for now - this would require some testing to do.
# Location is URL specific, <Directory is Directory specifiec
# Probably want <Directory
#<Location /pub>
# DefaultType application/octet-stream

# Specify a default language. This means that all data
# going out without a specific language tag (see below) will
# be marked with this one. You probably do NOT want to set

# * It is generally better to not mark a page as

# * language!

# Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
# keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard
# language code is pl) may wish to use "AddLanguage pl .po" to
# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
#
# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#
# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char

### Section 3: Virtual Hosts
#
# VirtualHost: If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
#NameVirtualHost *

#
