Four example files (.dat) are included in the distribution. The cyclobutane example includes color. There is a folder named 'put these files elsewhere' which includes files used by the free graphics library PGPLOT that has been incorporated into ORTEP-III. (1) Put 'grfont.dat' anywhere convenient on your hard disk. (2) Edit the entry for PGPLOT_FONT in 'pgplotenvnames', giving the complete path (beginning with the name of your hard drive) where you've put 'grfont.dat'. (3) Place 'pgplotenvnames' in the Preferences folder inside your System Folder. ORTEP-III has been written so it will run on a variety of platforms without modification. As such, the interface is simply a text window in which the user types the input. Also as a result, the data files must be in the folder that contains the application. After displaying the image on the screen, hit the ENTER or RETURN key twice to get back to the user input window. Hitting ENTER again terminates ORTEP. When you see STOP appear in the window, you still have to quit the application under the FILE menu (a peculiarity of Fortner Research LS Fortran). We are anxious to hear what you think about this version of ORTEP, any suggestions you might have, and any problems that you encounter. Please send these via e-mail to ortep@ornl.gov.
