ILL CITATION STATISTICS

ISI COUNTRIES

The table shows the ranking, the country, the numbers of papers and citations, and the average number of citations per paper. Note that since ILL is located in France, France is listed on all papers so comes out on top :-) Note also that some authors list their "country" as Scotland or England rather than the UK, and there are also seperate entries for Germany and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Remember also that only papers in collaboration with an ILL scientist are considered. Scientists in some member countries increasingly use the ILL as a "service", and do not collaborate, so their papers are "lost" in a survey such as this. All scientists from non-member countries such as the USA are required to collaborate with member country scientists, often ILL, so almost all their papers are included here.

Astonishingly though, the USA is ranked very highly even though the USA is not a member of ILL ! This is explained partly by the fact that the number of citations per paper (20+) is higher when an American scientist is a co-author, and partly by the fact that "American" experiments that require ILL, tend to represent high profile science. We might conclude that further restricting US access to ILL might reduce our perceived scientific impact, a kind of "own goal".

The smaller member countries, such as Switzerland and perhaps more surprisingly Spain, benefit from a relatively high number of citations to work with ILL.

Finally, smaller countries who are not members of ILL, such as Denmark and Sweden, also do rather well in terms of impact, and again the number of citations per paper is high, as for the USA.
