Using the Mailing List Gateway to Participate

Participating in the newsgroup via email
General Email access has been created
for the general crystallography newsgroup,
sci.techniques.xtallography thanks to Alan Hewatt
(hewat@ill.fr) at ILL, Grenoble, France

There may be a number of reasons you may like to use
this newsgroup to E-mail link.
- You don't have internet/
Usenet newsgroup access.
- Your existing news-server is rather unreliable.
- The news to your part of the world is a bit slow.
Send an email to the following address:
listserv@ill.fr
with the following message in the body text :-
SUB s.t.xtal_l Your_Name.
Confirmation of Subscription
You will then receive an email reply stating that you
have successfully joined the newsgroup to mail gateway
list and also receive a list of other commands you can
use with the "mailing-list".
Remember to send any "listserv" commands to :-
listserv@ill.fr
Just use your email program to send your message to:
s.t.xtal_l@ill.fr
To make it easy to send articles and messages, try using the
"alias" facility of your email program:- e.g.
alias name email address
xtal Xtal-newsgroup s.t.xtal_l@ill.fr
Then when you want to send an article or query, just email it
to
Xtal-newsgroup and your email software should handle the rest.
If your email program does not support this "alias" option :-
- Consider changing to a "better" email program such as
the public domain (i.e., free) "pine" software which is
available for UNIX, DOS and MS Windows.
This program is user friendly and powerful.
To obtain binaries or source code, anonymous ftp to
ftp.cac.washington.edu/pine or
(140.142.100.6/pine).
(there are other programs around - e.g., Wintrumpet (MS-Windows), Eudora
(Mac and MS-Windows), etc).
When participating in a newsgroup, you can continue the discussion by either
"following-on" a response to the entire newsgroup, or sending a reply directly
to the author via email. Below is more detailed information on how to
accomplish this.
Using your email program, note down the email address of the author and
use the forward option in your email program to correspond with the original
message author author.
Using your email program, highlight the message that you wish to
continue the discussion on and reply to the message.
Send an email to the following address:
listserv@ill.fr
With the following message in the body text :-
SIG s.t.xtal_l.
Confirmation of Subscription
You will then receive an email reply stating that you
have successfully unsubscribed(signed off) from the list.
Remember to send any "listserv" commands to :-
listserv@ill.fr
