Obtaining AFPL Ghostscript 8.10

See also the topic Ghostscript Licensing.

Post-release news

After you get this version of Ghostscript, we suggest that you track news, updates, and fixes here or at the Ghostscript community website, ghostscript.com.

Mirror sites

The primary site for the Ghostscript source code is http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ghostscript/. The primary FTP site for the full Ghostscript release is ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/. Ghostscript is also available from many mirror sites which may be closer to you and provide faster access. Ghostscript is also available on CD-R.

Unix & VMS

You will need to obtain the following sources: and also the following fonts:
Start by reading the Readme.htm file in ghostscript-8.10.tar.gz.

It is also worthwhile having the GV, GSview, ggv or kghostview previewer.

Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP

You will need to obtain and run the self-extracting EXE

gs810w32.exe, AFPL Ghostscript 8.10 for Win32 7264768 bytes
You can unzip this if you want to check the contents.

It is recommended that you also install GSview, a graphical interface to Ghostscript.

gsv44w32.exe, GSview 4.4 for Win32 1570816 bytes

OS/2

Precompiled OS/2 binaries are not currently available.

DOS

MS-DOS is no longer supported by AFPL Ghostscript. See Aladdin Ghostscript 5.10 for a 32-bit DOS EXE. Alternatively, the Win32 package above includes gswin32c.exe, a Win32 command line version of Ghostscript.

Compiling from sources (Windows or OS/2)

If you plan to re-compile from the sources, you will need gs800w32.exe or gs800os2.zip plus: The documentation for Ghostscript is typically installed in the directory c:/gs/gs8.10/doc. Look for Readme.htm, New-user.htm, Install.htm and Use.htm.

GSview

If using OS/2 or MS-Windows it is strongly recommended that you also get GSview, which provides a graphical interface to Ghostscript.

To unpack ZIP files, you will need an unzip program such as Info-ZIP unzip.

Macintosh

AFPL Ghostscript 8.10 is available precompiled for the Mac at the mirror sites listed above.

This is simply an update of the Ghostscript engine; you'll still need to use it with a viewer application like MacGSView. Simply replace the various pieces with the updated versions from the macgs-800-shlib folder. For MacGSView 2.0beta4, the important pieces are the 'GhostscriptLib PPC' file in the Extensions Folder, and the 'lib' directory in Application Support:Ghostscript inside the system folder.

To compile MacOS shared component from source, you just need the macgs-810-src.sit archive available from the same locations, and Metrowerks Codewarrior v7 (or above). This archive contains all the third party libraries required to build Ghostscript, but not the source to the viewer application or the standard fontset (see above) required for text rendering.
