Limitations of the Demonstration Version ------------------------------------------- This Endeavour version is for demonstration purposes only. The differences to the full version are: - The structure solution facility is restricted to the elements present in the tutorial's compounds (currently H, Li, B, C, N, O, Na, P, S, Ni, Cu, Ru, In, La, Au, Pb) and to carbon containing molecules with composition C14, C15NO2S, and C15H23NO2S. - There is a limitation in the 'Save' function: Saving files in Endeavour's proprietary format is disabled, whereas export into other formats ('Save as..') works. Please contact Crystal Impact if you are interested in the program after having performed the tutorial calculations but need a special testing version meeting your personal needs for further validation. 2. Installing Endeavour ----------------------- Before you install and run Endeavour Demonstration Version, you should check the following system requirements: (a) Minimum system requirements Microsoft Windows 95 or 98 or NT 4.0 or 2000 or XP operating system Personal Computer with Intel Pentium (or compatible processor) 32 megabytes of RAM 20 megabytes of free disk space Graphics resolution of 800 x 600 pixels with 256 colors CD-ROM drive Microsoft-compatible mouse (b) Optimum system requirements Microsoft Windows 95 or 98 or NT 4.0 or 2000 or XP operating system Personal Computer with Intel Pentium II or III (or compatible processor) 32 megabytes of RAM (Windows NT: 64 megabytes) 20 megabytes of free disk space Graphics resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels or higher with 32,768 or more colors ("High Color", "True Color") CD-ROM drive Microsoft-compatible mouse Please download the self-extracting archive "Endeavour-Demo.exe" from our webpage: http://www.crystalimpact.com/download/endeavour/demo/Endeavour-Demo.exe Once the download has finished, double-click on the file. The installation program will lead you through the setup process. Please note the terms of the "End User License Agreement", which will appear in the second dialog box. 3. Obtaining and Installing ACD ChemSketch Freeware ------------------------------------------------------- If you would like to apply Endeavour to crystal structures of molecules, you might want to download and install ACD ChemSketch Freeware which is one of the leading programs for drawing and creating molecular structures. You can download the program from http://www.acdlabs.com/download/chemsk.html Afterwards, please double-click on the file "chemsk8.exe" which has been downloaded. This will open the self-extracting archive and start the installation program right away. Please follow the instructions on the screen until "Setup complete." is displayed. Please note that the ACD ChemSketch version is freeware ! There are two main consequences out of this: a) You can install ACD ChemSketch Freeware on as many PC's as you like. b) Neither ACD nor Crystal Impact can provide any support for the ACD ChemSketch Freeware version. If you are interested in a full version, you should check the ACD webpage: http://www.acdlabs.com/products/chem_dsn_lab/chemsketch/ 4. Documentation ---------------- A comprehensive tutorial is delivered in Acrobat Reader format (PDF) . You can access the tutorial either from the menu ("Help-Tutorial"), from the Windows "Start" menu ("Start/Programs/Endeavour 1.4/Endeavour Tutorial") or directly by double-clicking in the Windows Explorer on the "tutorial.pdf" file in Endeavour's program directory. You will need Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 or higher to read the TUTORIAL.PDF file. You can download it free-of-charge from: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html In addition to the tutorial, Endeavour provides a comprehensive online-help library. To access the Help Library when Endeavour is running, select the "Help topics" command from the Help menu. You can also access the Help Library from the Windows Start menu: "Start/Programs/Endeavour 1.4/Endeavour Help". Besides this, context sensitive help is available in almost any situation when Endeavour is running, simply by pressing the F1 button on your keyboard. 5. Online Update ---------------- Endeavour is able to automatically download and install a new version once it has become available. It connects to the Crystal Impact webserver and compares the version of the most recent update available there to the version which is currently installed on your PC. In order to achieve this, a working connection to the internet is required, of course. If you are not connected to the internet, Endeavour will ask you to do so before continuing. If a more recent version is found on the webserver, a list of changes and improved features in the new version will be displayed, and you will be asked if you would like to download the corresponding update. Once you have acknowledged and the corresponding files have been downloaded, you will be asked to close all open Endeavour windows so that the update program can replace the program executable. After the update has been completed, Endeavour will be restarted so that you can check if the update was successful. This can e.g. be achieved by selecting the "About Endeavour..." command in the "Help" menu and checking the version number and date in the dialog which is displayed. By default, Endeavour checks the Crystal Impact webserver for a new version automatically each time it is executed. If you would like to disable this feature (e.g. if you are not permanently connected to the internet), you can do so on the "Desktop" page of the "Tools/Options" dialog, simply by removing the hook in front of "Check for available updates when starting" at the bottom of the dialog. Even if you have disabled the "Automatic update checking" option, you can update your software online by selecting the "Online update" command from the "Help" menu. The procedure will be the same as the one described above for the automatic update. 6. Online Support ----------------- In case of trouble with Endeavour, please refer to the Endeavour Support Page on the Web, which has the address: http://www.crystalimpact.com/endeavour/support.htm Or send an e-mail to: support@crystalimpact.com 7. Contacting Crystal Impact ---------------------------- Endeavour provides quick access to the Crystal Impact Web site ("http://www.crystalimpact.com/endeavour/").
